Why this petition matters

Started by Ms F

Sophia Kamba is being detained in Yarl's Wood - and does not know when or if she will be able to see her 13-year-old son Joel who has sickle cell anaemia and is awaiting an operation in hospital. He has been in Kettering hospital since Monday 27 March. She first applied for permission from the Head of Immigration to see her unwell son two weeks before this as he has been admitted to hospital previously and has been unwell ever since his mum was arrested in the middle of the night, five months ago.

Sophia Kamba was booked onto a flight to Jamaica - she was born there and grew up in a children's home there, but was raped and came to the UK for a new life. She has lived in the UK for 27 years, and has a daughter as well as a son in Northamptonshire. Thankfully, her lawyer has stopped her from being deported so far.

Ms Kamba wants indefinite leave to remain, but she fears that some spent convictions (from 10 years ago, including shoplifting - although she was let off early for good behaviour) are being used against her - as is happening to many people that have not been naturalised and were born in certain countries, such as those in Africa and the Caribbean.

Ms Kamba's separation from her sick son is unacceptable. Even doctors at the hospital in Kettering have told the Immigration Office that Joel needs his mum. The longer his mum is away from him, the more his condition is deteriorating.

The Home Office have told Sophia she can Skype her children from Jamaica. This is not good enough. A mother needs to be with her son and involved in his care as Joel has had sickle cell anaemia since birth and she understands his needs.

Government guidelines state that applications to settle in Britain should be granted to refugees or those considered to need humanitarian protection. Sophia Kamba's family must be considered in need of humanitarian protection and therefore Sophia Kamba needs to stay with her son.

This petition calls on Home Secretary Amber Rudd to consider the impact of Sophia Kamba's separation from her young son's health - to grant her settlement in the UK where she has made her life with her family up to now. Let her be with her son immediately.
